Decker's family moved from Louisiana to Georgia during the summer of 1995. She was writing songs regularly as well as visiting Nashville to find deals. Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was the head for Island/Def Jam. Reid then agreed to sign Decker to a recording contract. On August 9, 2009 Decker released her first self-titled album under the name Jessie James. Jessie James achieved a reasonable amount of popularity and had Wanted being able to make it into the Top 40 charts. Decker was always viewed as a country singer however, the album's promotion and production was designed to appeal to a more pop-oriented audience. Decker's music was under greater attention after the launch of two singles. The next song, Boys in the Summer featured a rural feel. Decker launched her sophomore album under two different titles: Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy. Mercury put it on hold when the first three singles did poorly in the country charts. Decker then was let go from the contract.
